We’re standing before a portrait of the electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire through observation, but also imagination. It all starts from the idea that no single perspective would be enough to obtain a true understanding of her figure.
Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes is a documentary that explores the life and the creative output of Delia Derbyshire. It departs from the discovery of a collection of works left by the artist after herdeath, and a series of personal documents that reveal details about her childhood, her paintings and her fight against alcoholism. Derbyshire’s contribution has been downplayed, as she was part of a highly masculinized context.
This film uses archive material, interviews with her collaborators, and dramatic recreations to build a biopic able to transcend its genre, becoming a lyrical feature film that plays tribute to this relevant artist, where sound is of paramount importance. Caroline Catz, who also plays Delia Derbyshire herself, explores her figure and vindicates this woman whom today’s music owes so much. Premiere in Spain.
